Effects of Tomato Leaf Curl Palampur Virus (ToLCPMV) and plant infection status on the fecundity and development of Bemisia Tabaci (Gennadius) across seasonal variations

Abstract
The interaction between plant viruses and insect vectors influences
pest dynamics, yet effects on vector fitness remain unclear. This study
assessed direct and plant-mediated effects of Tomato leaf curl Palampur virus
(ToLCPMV) on fecundity and development of Bemisia tabaci across seasons
using tomato (susceptible host) and cotton (non-host). On tomato, fecundity
varied with virus status, plant condition, and season; viruliferous whiteflies
laid more eggs, peaking on healthy plants during SMW 37 (129.80 ± 5.36 eggs),
while the lowest occurred in non-viruliferous individuals on infected plants in
SMW 51 (16.00 ± 1.22 eggs). Oviposition followed similar trends (4.99 ± 0.25
eggs/female/cm²/day, SMW 37). Developmental durations were primarily
temperature-driven, extending under cooler conditions. Female longevity
increased in viruliferous individuals. On cotton, viruliferous whiteflies again
showed higher fecundity (128.40 ± 2.97 eggs, SMW 28). Temperature and sunshine
enhanced fecundity, whereas humidity and rainfall prolonged development, with
initial attraction to infected plants shifting later to healthy hosts.
