Bioefficacy of entomopathogenic fungi against the leafhopper, Amrasca biguttula biguttula (ishida) infesting Okra

Abstract

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of different entomopathogenic fungi against leafhopper under laboratory and field conditions during rabi and kharif 2023. Seasonal incidence, influence of weather parameters, laboratory bioassay and field evaluation of fungal formulations were studied. Leafhopper populations reached a peak during May (14.02 insects/3 leaves) in rabi and August (13.23 insects/3 leaves) in kharif. Weather factors significantly influenced pest incidence. Laboratory evaluation revealed that thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 0.4 g L⁻¹ recorded the highest mortality (93.33–100%), while among the biological treatments, the combined formulation of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, and Verticillium lecanii @ 15 g L⁻¹ recorded the highest mortality (73.33%) at 72 Hat. Field studies also confirmed that the combined fungal formulation effectively reduced leafhopper populations, recording 68.66% and 71.10% reduction over untreated control during rabi and kharif, respectively. The study indicates that the combined entomopathogenic fungal formulation can be incorporated into integrated pest management programmes as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical insecticides.
