Abstract
Assam is rich in biodiversity and cultural
diversity, supporting traditional practices of insect consumption and
insect-based medicine among indigenous communities. This review examines the
nutritional value, medicinal applications, and regional variations in insect
utilization, particularly in Assam. Studies have documented edible insect
species and species used in traditional medicine across the region. Different
insect life stages and products, including larvae, pupae, honey, and cocoons,
are traditionally used for various health complaints. These practices reflect
the close relationship between indigenous knowledge, biodiversity, nutrition,
and traditional healthcare. Further research is needed to assess food safety,
identify bioactive compounds, and validate reported therapeutic properties.
Documenting traditional practices and conserving insect diversity may support
sustainable food systems and preserve indigenous knowledge.
